I have speculated in other threads that the price drops we're seeing in the N810 might be like the sudden drops in price we saw with the N800... two weeks before the N810 announcement....

There is definitely something in the pipeline...as should be obvious by the new operating system built around the much more powerful TI chipset. Didn't make CES, but lots of good stuff doesn't get released there.

I came close to jumping on this deal but then I dusted off my old n800 and realized why I had to dust it off (besides our cat chewing through the power adapter cable.) Took the time to update to OS2008...nicer, but still got hung-up with repository issues and application conflicts.

It wasn't as useful to me as I'd hoped and I got very frustrated dealing with installation issues. I found I used an Archos more for music and video and a netbook and my old Palm for surfing. When I thought I'd need to do a reasonable amount of surfing I packed the netbook (Mini9 can be bought for $200 at the Dell outlet store right now.) When I only needed to get a piece of info, the Treo sufficed.

If the new model will perform as well as an Ipod touch...ie. fast page retrieval, zoom and music and video playback as good as an Archos, it will once again find it's way into my backpack.

I speculate that economic conventional wisdom says, "discount sooner in poorer market conditions." If I were to make a gross linear interpolation based on the recent 69% profit loss figure (which I will disgustingly use instead as a percentage change in units-sold) and your 2 week number, and assuming that Nokia wants to sell the same number of units before the RX-51 release, 6 1/2 weeks would be the earliest. But if the trend is that conditions are worsening, it would be longer. YMMV

number_of_weeks = 2 / (100% - 69%)

Poor Nokia. They only made a profit of 576 million euros ($744 million US) in Q4 2008. What ever will they do?

Oh I know. Lay off staff.

I hope daperl is wrong, and we get a product announcement sooner rather than later. But, hey, whatever. Nothing I can do about it one way or another.

EDIT: Now I understand where the maemo unit came from inside Nokia... They had enough profits that they could afford to chase a few unicorns...

Yeah. Repositories not found. Fun stuff. For example, tried to install battery power plus? Missing libs...missing repositories. Couldn't get Python to install. Added repositories...got some of it...but not all. Only way was to install an app that I didn't need but which installed the missing library.

It should be easier.

On the other hand, I used the tablet today, while at lunch, where I didn't want to bring my netbook. Was able to look up my rental car reservation.
