you would have installed them - they are in the application manager named things like home IP or homeCPU or something like that.... they give you information about your CPU usage and memory remaining/network activity etc on your desktop

I've not installed anything like that (That I know of hehehe). Plus I have just reflashed the device so there is nothing on there at all besides what it came with and it's had no effect of the battery consumption problems.

It's never been very good with the battery, and I can't help but wonder if something is wrong with it, rather than just a simple problems with a programme draining it... Or maybe I'm just jumping the gun

well, the traditional answer is to disable metacrawler - from a post by TA-t3....

in osso-xterm:
sudo gainroot
cd /usr/bin
mv metalayer-crawler metalayer-crawler.off

(or .deactivated or whatever you want. The point is to rename, which is what the 'mv' command does here.)

Then reboot. It's easier than trying to figure out how you kill it.

Sorry, but I don't really understand, I'm not use to this kind of thing.

What is Metacrawler and what will disabling it do, not just to the battery consumption, but to the system?

again quoting TA-t3 from the same thread

I would say the method last posted by myself (some 4 posts up I think) is the easiest one. It requires that you have osso-xterm and becomeroot installed, however. It won't break your n800.

As a matter of fact I'm not entirely sure what metalayer-crawler does.. or rather, what it's good for.. I'm pretty certain it's about looking all over the cards to find media files which can be indexed in advance for the media player or maybe also some other applications, or something to that extent.

However, I can still use both the media player and the photo application after I disabled the crawler.. go figure. In any case, personally I hate the concept, I much prefer to have a standard normal file browsing feature in the applications and look up what I want to access that way.

xterm is just a terminal where you can type commands

Thanks^^

I am a little wary of disabling something that I have no idea what it will effect or how to undo it. I lack the know-how to put things right when they go wrong

I can't tell from that thread exactly what disabling it will entail.

If anything does go wrong (and believe me, if I'm doing it, it probably will) will another reflash fix it back to the way it was? Or maybe a restore?

Sorry for being such a Newbie

Yes, a reflash will bring it back to factory defaults. Alternatively, the simple way to reverse it is by typing

sudo gainroot
cd /usr/bin
mv metalayer-crawler.off metalayer-crawler

into a terminal
