I'm shocked that there is no real alternative on the tablet if you want a player that can just turn a dir (or collection of dirs) of music into a playlist, without having to stuff it all into some "library" first...

Ok, oddly enough, panucci may be heading that way. Now, i wonder if i can talk them into adding a shuffle option...

Not that the state of music players on the desktop is any better. There are a ton of itunes wannabes in some semi-working state or other. All of them overkill for my kind of use...

I love the simplicity of XMMS 1.x, but not 2.x since their change of design to a client/server setup pretty much boned it. Thus I now use Amarok instead.

Uh oh. This is very tempting now. Early '90s suggests possibility for some tinkering since even in good shape it will need at least some mechanical work. Hmmmm.

If one shows up in my driveway can I tell my wife that you are to blame?

Correct, as it happens, but it's a bad inference. I could have an iPod, in which case I'd run Rockbox or iPodLinux on it, and not use iTunes, databases, and such-like.

I have two Sansa players (view and connect), and IMHO, those make the iPod look like an expensive plastic brick. And yes, I've played with iPods and I've played with others, but the Sansa's are just way nicer and they're bloody near indestructible. I've seen guys kill iPods like they were made of delicate crystal, and I've literally bounced mine off walls (not intentionally, mind you. it was just a rather bad combination of events that resulted in it getting kicked across the room and into the wall.) and it didn't even bat an eye, get a scratch, a crack, or squat. I picked it up and it was like brand new still. And it was running at the time even! Do that with an iPod and you'll be RMA'ing the sucker.

To me the iPod is just a cheaply made, overpriced, status symbol.

The XMMS/20 year old car analogy would work well if your 20 year old car had huge holes in the floorboard and dash.

XMMS shouldn't be used anymore because it has *HUGE GAPING* security issues.

By the way, the default media player can add folders of songs to a playlist without being in a library just fine.

Here's the original post I made about using and creating playlists for the default media player: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...793#post120793

XMMS has security holes? On an NIT? Not really worried, to be honest.

Thanks, bun, for asking me that question. I've been listening to my music again after a long hiatus.

I drive a Miata too! 1994 model. How did you get the carmount to work. I had to tie it down with yarn using the vent slots. It kinda works.

I never understood how to use XMMS on the tablet. I just stick with Canola...
