No. See Google's about page, and the wikipedia article.

Well, I did read the Wikipedia article before posting so as not to sound like a 'tard, but what I read made it sound an awful lot like Skype. I guess maybe I'm still not totally understanding the concept. o_0

I am a little bummed. I got my invite last week, and was not able to use it since it's open to US IP's at the moment. Now, it says that the invite is no longer valid.

I tried going through a US proxy, but that did not work either. Oh well - hopefully they officially open it to Canadians. Knowing us, we'll settle for nothing at all, and display a big smile

while skype is a voip service that can make and recive pots calls at local rates, google voice is about having a single number attached to multiple physical phones.

and yes, you can get much the same effect by having multiple skype enabled devices...

btw, i am a bit surprised that they choose to route via gizmo rather then provide its own sip server...

I wouldn't say "without the big brother spying...It is google, after all...

In essence, Google Voice is a front-end to all of your phones. You can route calls from google voice to any combination of home- and mobile phones. For instance, say your best friend calls your GV number. You can program it to ring your mobile and home phone simultaneously. Or your wife's sister calls, you can set it up to ring her mobile, then if no answer, ring the home line, and so forth.
