I write as both a side gig and hobby.

In terms of the side gig, I'm a writer for the website Brighthand (been doing that for a number of years now). I also maintain a personal blog, and a Christian-ministry focused one called Mobile Ministry Magazine. Those two tend to take up most of my writing juices.

Other than that, I write poems, occasional song lyrics, and have been known to put a short story together here and there.

Ironically, all of this writing tends to translate well into my day gig; folks love to pitch me to proof everything from IT documentation to press releases XD

I co-authored the book "Exploring Python" and sometimes write articles for a German Unix magazine.

Other than that, I write software.

Wow! That's awesome guys! All of you have some really interesting stuff you do! I have so far 3 major articles I've published for Linux+ magazine too, which I forgot to mention earlier. Two in the February issue, and one in the upcoming July issue.

Mhm... interesting thread. Makes me remember that I actually did write some short stories, experimented with (very) strange poetry/prose crossovers and other bizarre forms of liturature.

Eventually, I lost interest (or what's the word I'm looking for? "audience"?) and moved on to newspaper and magazine articles. They eventually got less periodic and more electronic... So now all of my writing takes place in various online media.

Maybe I should try some more experimental stuff again? The only thing I remember is that it took lots of alcohol to get started.... and that on the next day I found out that I could actually do hexameters.

I actually have written a great deal of poetry. A lot of it is on the Internet. The trick is knowing where to find it

Also, like others in this thread, I write speculative fiction and comedic monologues... mostly here at t.m.o.

Today I wrote and sent to the editor the 4th part of a brief sci-fi story of a drug addiction doctor kidnapped by capt. Kirk on the NCC Enterprise to teach them about addiction related disorders and politics in the 21th century. It's being published on our local health agency bimonthly magazine. Two parts out of four have been written on my 810!

Heck, I say go for it! All the novels and short stories I have posted on my site are actually experimental pieces too. So they're free to read, comment on (I heavily encourage comments and feedback since they help me learn about any mistakes I've made and help me get better.) and share. I also find that writing experimental fiction and sharing it with others is a lot of fun. Hopefully some of it gets the attention of a publisher or agent who looks at it and gets interested enough in my other novels to consider publishing those, as they're the more polished pieces I'm actually out to get published.
lol! Cool! I remember a fanfic sci-fi someone did back in the late 90's that involved McCoy, Spock, and Scotty and was based off of the "Generations" movie, kinda like a footnote to the movie that told about the reactions of the last 3 surviving crewmembers from the original enterprise. For a fan fic it was pretty darned good. I think I still have a copy of it somewhere. Might have to drag it out and read it again sometime.

For those who are interested, I've posted another little tidbit in my writing section that you may enjoy. It's a slightly different twist on my normal writing style, but you should enjoy it. It's called "The Cat Who Stood His Ground". It's a short story, about two pages long, so you shouldn't have too much of a read, but I expect that you'll enjoy it immensely.

I am occasionally asked to paraphrase paper ads and announcements to put online as part of my job as a webmaster/tech... guy... I also, rarely, write down fiction story plots, but never have the guts to start a real story.
