Please enlighten me because my interest is peaked.
I dont know about others but if there will be an app like BMP then I sure will download and show off to my friends and be like; can your phone do this?

In my original post I said my wife is interested in the "N900 as her next phone/MP3 player".

She carries around an iPod Touch, a really nice MP3 player with a 60 GB hard drive, a camera and a Nokia phone. One device to do all those functions would obviously be convenient.

Her MP3 player is starting to give some trouble, so she will soon need to purchase a new one. It is easier for her to justify paying for an N900 is if she doesn't have to buy a new MP3 player. Her decision will hinge on whether the N900 if it meets her music needs -- and that makes perfect financial sense, from her perspective.

She uses the MP3 player for work, so it is the most important (and expensive) of all her devices.

With some software, I think the N900 could be her MP3 player and simple music editor/mixer.

yes, i am sure you could run audacity or some linux app to mix/edit your music.

But it would help if you gave an example. Like what kind of "mixing" ? There are some pretty good iphone apps that have like 4 channel mixing, but they are expensive and stuff.

The N900 has an mp3 player as pretty much all mid to upper range phones do. It is adequate from what I've seen in demos, but not on the level of an iPod (unfortunately).

What I still don't get, and forgive me, is what the DJ app is for. Can you please give me a scenario where it would be useful? I am honestly not trying to be snarky, but I really don't get why this feature would be nice on a phone... or any portable media device for that matter.

A music editor on the other hand, I could see a use for that... I wonder if there's anything like an Audacity port?

My wife uses MixMeister Express 6, a $50 Windows app. See it here: http://www.mixmeister.com/products_mmexp6.html

it does everything she needs, except export to MP3. She only uses the simple functions such as:
  • Editing - split, copy, paste, move, join
  • Transitions
  • Changing tempo of a segment
That's about it.

I asked her to look at Audacity. You think Audacity will run on the N900?

Maybe an Audacity port is the solution...

See my prior thread. She mostly uses the visual (graphical) music editing functions along with some transition (fading) and tempo effects.

She specifically likes MixMeister because it is graphical and easy to use. I'll assume she could get used to Audacity if it has the functions she uses and would run on the N900.

I think I understand now. I had this image of her standing in front of a huge crowd, her N900 plugged into an amp with speakers, rocking the house using only a virtual turntable.

As for Audacity, a lite Maemo port sounds quite useful. I have no idea if this has been attempted though.

I agree - Audacity Lite for Maemo would be awesome. We'll put up the first bounty!

Would Audacity work well with Easy Debian on an N810? Has anyone tried that? (Would Deblet or another alternative be better?) Hoping to hear from someone that has already tried Audacity on the tablet... thanks

I also don't understand the reason for your wife's need of a music editing application on the N900 if currently the ipod is used just for playing and the editing is done on the PC. Is she also trying to replace the PC or do editing on the go? If she is used to MixMeister for her editing but wants to get her projects into MP3, she can export her projects to WAV and use the free Lame MP3 encoder to convert from one to the other. I haven't used Audacity in a while but I belive you have to add an MP3 encoder anyway to get the projects to export to MP3.
