Why would u want a snap grid option when different icons and widgets come in different sizes. Manually doing it is the best choice.

Simply because i can align icons to a grid, then deactivate the grid, an freely place the bigger widgets ... so easy.

Anyone advocating "manual is best" is either too close to the problem or hasn't tried an N900, IMHO.

Given I've heard that most users are expected to launch apps from their desktops, having a snap-to-grid for the common sized icons is pretty nice there. Similarly, although widgets are randomly sized (and non resizable AFAICS :-() there's still a strong aesthetic argument for aligning baselines, tops, edges in general.

Fortunately, Quim's said that hildon-desktop will be fully open source :-)

I expect to see a community app in Extras called, "desktop-align"...

One solution would be to allow items to be freely draggable, but whenever they approached an same dimensional edge of another item, they would snap to that baseline. In this way, all items could be placed anywhere on the desktop, but users could cleanly align items at their discretion.

In the example below, imagine that the white, dotted lines are invisible.

Once you have satisfied any obsesive/compulsive need to make things right, can the desktop or individual items then be locked in place?

Well, yes, in fact. Items are draggable in "Edit" mode. Once you return to the normal desktop, everything is locked in place.

Bonus points granted for calculating center lines and snapping to those also.

i am too.
though i think i have seen the possibility of dragging icons to the most right or left of the screen and thereby placing them in a list on the right- or lefthand side of the screen. which is maybe an outcome for what you are after? (arranging the icons neatly) (IF that is what you are after)
this would probably not work for widgets though
