I would guess that's the best way to do it. Sure, it would be cool to have an automated process on the N900, but the apps available on a PC are going to offer better results. The most important part will be getting the raw image capture.

That said, does anyone have a sample gallery of images shot with the N900 camera? If the quality is marginal, this discussion may be moot.

I think that if you take the HDR photos in lower resolution (e.g. 1 MPIX, then device should be able to take the 3 needed photos so quickly that no tripod is needed for all relatively lightish scenes.

The Samsung I8910 HD has a kind of HDR option called WDR (Wide dynamic range)

I wonder if Camera can not just take 3 .jpgs with different exposure, but take 1 RAW quickly, and then post process it in 3 jpgs or tiffs and then combine it into 1 HDR image. No tripod, everybody happy

Being able to capture raw pictures is definitely desirable. Using a single raw file with some tonal mapping would probably be useful for filling in some details in the shadows and hi-lites of ordinary holiday pictures.

I just think it would also be fun going a step further and enabling us to make such weird looking super HDR pictures like http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...nt_pauls_1.jpg

Al Pavangkanan, or Dr. Tran, as he's known in the Symbian community, is well known as a photography guru, and his Flickr account is very popular. Here is an article he wrote as a guest writer on the Nokia blog:

As I mentioned in the Computational Photography thread, I'd really like to see someone port fotoxx to the N900. It has cool features like HDR and panorama autostitch.

The problem is not combining the pictures, but forcing multiple exposures of the same scene as quickly as possible without messing about with the settings (which, currently, on the N900, involves poking around on the touchscreen, and is guaranteed to move the camera).

EDIT: timsamoff and I did a lot of N900 photography in Amsterdam, and we agreed that, while the N900's camera is very good, it is very hard to get acceptable images from HDR scenes.

Example:

Interesting, the image size doesn't seem very big at all.

I just posted a thumbnail. Did you see the original on the linked Flickr page?
