Since the original poster specified which phone he or she considers (Moto Droid, because of the CPU clock frequency), I can indeed tell which one is better.

Of course, DRM has nothing to do with how open an OS is.

Well this is a big IF, considering that implementing DRM on maemo might prove to be more difficult then you think.

Yes. Maemo 6, from what was said in the Summit, will support two modes, switchable at any time by the user. One "DRM mode" where all the DRM stuff is on, and the "Open mode" which is the mode in which we use Maemo now.

The idea being that, if you want to download a DRM'd song, you would need to switch to DRM mode to download and listen to it.

Me, I will just stay permanently in open mode and avoid DRM like the plague.

Oh, and btw, since carriers usually don't like people tinkering with devices, there is a big fat chance that any carrier-branded device with subsidy will be locked in DRM mode. Whoever, if that happens, I bet someone will also find a way to unlock it...

Wiki EN:

"Digital rights management (DRM) is a generic term for access control technologies that can be used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders and individuals to try to impose limitations on the usage of digital content and devices. The term is used to describe any technology which inhibits uses (legitimate or otherwise) of digital content that were not desired or foreseen by the content provider. The term generally doesn't refer to other forms of copy protection which can be circumvented without modifying the file or device, such as serial numbers or keyfiles. It can also refer to restrictions associated with specific instances of digital works or devices. Digital rights management is being used by companies such as Sony, Apple Inc., Microsoft and the BBC."

DRM doesn't have to be used by the software, if the authors don't want to do so, even if the OS does support the technology.

Edit: Forget it, it depends on how the commercialism (and thus the success of the platform) will use the OS. As the poster above mentioned, there will most likely be an "open mode" as well.

Well, you could just buy non-DRM'd music. Nokia Comes with Music should get rid of DRM already.

Depending on what you do multi-tasking, multi-tasking will be slower on Android due to the way their operating system works. Maemo will also be getting flash 10 in next year. That being said get you think will suit you better.

Personally both are attractive choices though I prefer Maemo more for the moment because it's more open (thus you don't have to hack around as much to get it to do what you want), and it's likely more efficient than Android due to the way the two operating systems work..

If Android can change the way apps are run in its environment and became more open than I would be using Android.

this is something i posted in another forum:

why are your complaining your still fail to realize people don't care about droid only what we techies tell our friends. I had a customer say they don't want the cliq because it don't look as cute as the mytouch this is the type of people t-mobile cater to. Yes the droid will sell but we still got phones on the horizon and android 2.0 will come to all devices only thing we missing on is the GPU (which there are hardly any 3d games on android) and the cpu which i can't complain about the cliq. Me myself im quitting tmobile (job wise) and still wouldn't sign my life away with the droid rather get the even more plus + N900 (whenever nokia decides to release my future baby Sad ).

Also we talking about Google here they will release there services to all devices so turn by turn will come very soon.

we have the G1, Mytouch, Cliq , Rumor HD 2 , N900 unlocked , Blackberry 9700 , Touch pro 2 , great plans , New samsung android (just got some accessories in our store), and everyone complain cause droid went to verizon so what.

I will agree with most of what you posted chronoe, but people will still buy Droid a lot more than any T-Mobile Android phones for a few reasons. First, Verizon has about triple the customers. Second, as you said, people don't know much, so unlike T-Mobile, Verizon runs ads (the Droid ads are extremely effective in my opinion) telling people why they want/need the Droid phone. I'm sure once it's released, they will come with more ads showing more details than the teaser that is out now.

However, regarding turn-by-turn, it will not come very soon. Google said very specifically that the turn-by-turn will only be available for Android 2.0. This means they will not make it available for any Android phones that are not running 2.0, and in my opinion, at least a couple months from now is not very soon, and that's the soonest time frame we can expect to see 2.0 on the G1, at least an official version.

I can only hope the last time frame mentioned was wrong, but the 2.0 upgrade was said to be in 2010, which is really not that close by. I am still clinging to the hope that the 2.0 from Droid is ported to the G1 by the hacker community, but I don't know if the hardware will be able to support it.

On a side note, I love the N900 as a piece of hardware, but I am not excited about the OS. I have become a pretty huge Android fanboy at this point, and I don't see myself buying any non Android phones any time soon. In my time using the G1, I have come to love a lot of the unique features of Android and the Google connectivity that I now rely on. I love Android too much to get the N900. That phone running Android 2.0, however, is my Nirvana, ha. I wish.

Edit: I did just stumble upon this, some hope that maybe an unlocked (or gasp T-Mobile/ATT) version of the Droid might become available.

Your not excited about the Os because your not use to it (im assuming). I'm use to it because ubuntu is my day to day computer i even had a chance to get windows 7 for free and passed it up because ubuntu runs so flawless on my 4 year old computer / also macos x lol.

Not saying android is bad its a different type of beast but having physical played with maemo in the NYC store (and using the g1 mytouch , played with the hacked android 2.0 from XDA, and Cliq i can say is no comparison don't know about the droid) i can attest to say that it is amazing. As i currently stated for myself i have currently found no reason to get the droid (just my opinion might suit others) and believe me i can if i really wanted to go to verizon thats the only carrier i haven't been on plus my family on it so to jump on the line is nothing. The turn by turn is a plus but for me i don't drive so others would want this lol. Yes verizon ads will hype it up but we talking about verizon look at storm 1/2 nobody ran to verizon when it came out and that was just as big as the Droid from a non-tech perspective. i refuse to pay 200 dollars(contract wise) for a phone and 120+ dollars for verizon (guessing here) just to have the Droid.

If you look at all the apps on android what really is compelling out there that other android devices cannot utilize that droid can have besides android 2.0 . if you really think about it if other devices don't get android 2.0 who is really going to develop for the droid if only verizon have 2.0. i pray and hope the N900 comes to T-mobile only competitive wise because that would be a game changer but if not im still getting it no matter what and this is coming from a ex android fanboy (but im sorry i get bored of the platform
at times).

No offence dude, but you need to differ hardware (like N900, Moto Droid, G1, N97, N95 etc.) from software (Maemo, Android, Symbian, WinMo etc.).

Android as software can't record in HD without any hardware.
N900 as hardware can't multi-task without any software.

Just sayin'.
