Hi, I find this also a necessity.
For info here are some more threads discussing this.
e.g. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=33830
but also the brainstorm at http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...ne_experience/

please vote and/or present your ideas there if you feel it's important.

Agreeing with etuyo.

I'm a longtime Sony Ericsson user and have fallen in love with the N900 and maemo 5, and the lack of this feature is very surprising. I'd especially love it if the SMS alerts could be contact specific as well. While planning to get the SE C905 (which quickly crashed and burned on me), I prepared contact specific ringtones and SMS alerts for my most used contacts. For the short time that the C905 was operational, it was a very useful feature to know not only who was calling me without looking, but also who was messaging me.

Separate alerts for different alarms would be great. Also, separate email alerts for different email accounts would be outstanding. As an audio engineer, I feel that full audio customization is a wonderful feature and should be standard on such a revolutionary hardware/software combo.

N900 doesn't come from the starting point of being a phone so much as a mobile internet device, so some of the things that seem 'phone obvious' are not there. Yet.
This is sick for every simple future someone has to write app. I thought that n900 is super phone and it should have all this little useful things.

Completely agree. Really hope it is something that someone can do something about and not something we just have to make do without. Another thing I am not happy with is that you can't edit the contact details as you could on N Series phones prior to the N97. You now have to rely on the built in details like mobile, work, etc. I have friends and relatives that visit the UK for business and holiday and I used to differentiate their UK mobile from their home country mobile by saving it as UK Mobile. Now I can't do that anymore.

I always wonder why is it is so common that when a manufacturer releases a new product they add loads of new stuff but take away things that were present in the previous product/version? Why can't they just keep everything that was in the previous version whilst improving some of these things and add all the new stuff they want to add? By removing some of the existing things you end up with a new device which should be better than the old one in everyway possible being better for some people and worse for others.

I can remember one future, that i really needed. I wanted to put a password on my sms folders but N95 and N95 8G did not had this future.
Also, what about mms? And this future to have different ring-tons for different contacts?
I do not need MMS i think it is useless but common N900 is super phone it should have all these simplest future.
Common Nokia we want to be proud of you!

They seem to have lost their way with the N97 and I thought they had found their way back with the N900. However, it seems the device lacks many very basis phone features that have been present in even the most basic Nokia phones for like 10 years. I had been watching youtube videos of this device everyday for 6 months and I thought it would be without question the best phone in the world. However, youtube videos will only show you the awesome desktopm browser, multi tasking and not reveal that it is lacking some very basic things that have been in Nokia phone for ages.

Now I am starting to fear that I would be quite disappointed with the device as the phone function is likely to be one of my most used functions.

Etuoyo and dinis_2003, would you like to add your requests for improving general phone functionality to this thread, please? They stand a far better chance of being noticed and acted upon there. They are good an valid points (especially the one I quoted above!)

Let's keep this thread to the focus of personalised ringtones, please.

Okay, srsly. Would you please stop complaining? They had major issues with the software & finishing a stable firmware this autumn, which was the main reason, that it had been delayed several times. So instead of trying to get in every little details, they focused on the main functions to work, on performance and on a long battery life.
However, they are aware of peoples complaints.
All these little nifty functions will be released step by step in the next fw releases, so please be patient.
If you aren't, than you are free to download the SDK and write an app, that does it for you.
Please keep in mind, that this is not Maemo 4.5, it's Maemo 5.0 and alot of functions had to be rebuilt, so it's taking its time.

We don't need an app. The OS can allows you to add on features, which I don't consider an application. For instance, if I add Nimbuzz to the IM profiles in Contacts, is that an app? Nokia made Maemo open so we can add things just like they can. Its the entire point, but everyone doesn't get it.
