I provided my father with a Linux computer some years ago. He does OK with the set of applications that he's using, and it's not a problem showing him how to do things. Including accessing the bank over the network, which more and more is a requirement - older people are getting monetarily punished if they want to continue using what they've used before.
What has turned out to be the biggest problem is when things change. By far the most problematic one is the network banking, because the @#!! bank keeps changing their layout, their menues, their sequence of operations, their pop-ups. Whenever this happens my father gets stuck, because he's afraid of doing something wrong. Or he can't find what he's looking for.
So, for all the other applications I set it up so that things stay the same and that sudden warning messages etc. are avoided. The problem is that I can do nothing with the bank!
