As the browser is in fullscreen (so you can't see the UI), it could be that the user is testing Fennec, which apparently will also have a portrait mode.

The person who posted that pic initially I believe is MickyFin on twitter.

Here is a recent thread:

@MickyFin And how did u do that? is it the default browser or Fennec beta or smthg?

Default browser. I have different firmware which is used for testing, so need to get permission to show a video of it.

Do we know the version of this update?

I believe that is more important to support portrait mode for other function rather than browser. Contacts, conversations, calendar, notes, calculator are stuff we need more often when we are on the move and we cannot use both hands.

The update today was 1.2009.42-11 which is the same version that is on the released N900.

This does not add portrait support to any app from the 2009.41-x versions that were on pre-production N900s.

So it will not be on the first released N900s....but will come (hopefully) later this year
As they told us before...so this supports the story of later added portrait mode

He's a blogger that went invited to Nokia last week.
There he add his device flashed with firmware 46-5 (that triggered also an Italian blog site on the N900 to wrongly say that that is the latest firmware available to download).

MichyFin is the owner of http://www.nokiausers.net/ also.

So we can conclude that Nokia *should* be on track to deliver a Christmas present to all the people that were screaming for Portrait all over the place.

Can we blame the delay on people who wanted portrait mode?

Portrait mode on browser is nice but it's still hard to see and it's better to browse with landscape. I hope to see portrait mode on other things like IM and SMS, watching video, photos..ect..

I agree with everything else you say - but why the hell would you want to watch video in portrait mode?
