So, from the sound of it, your N900 is fully booted (not just in "charging mode") and the screen is locked. If you use the unlock slider above the headphone jack, the LED should go dark for a minute or so while the screen is awake. Once it automatically locks again, the LED will switch back to green.

Have you tried removing the battery for several minutes? A "rest period" without a battery has been known to help previous Maemo devices recover from some odd conditions.

Have you tried reflashing? No guarantee it will help of course, but it sounds as though your phone boots up enough to do so.

Is there any sign that the backlight is on at least? With the backlight on, even a fully black screen on the N900 will be lighter than the surrounding bezel.

I'm not sure what help it is, but with the N800 at least, if the screen cable was physically disconnected, the tablet wouldn't boot. Instead, it entered some a diagnostic reporting mode that flashed the LED in a distinct pattern. If the N900 is similar to the N800, your phone isn't suffering from a disconnected display cable.

The n810 when it is charging takes a very long continued press to switch on. Did you try pressing the power button for a loooooooooooong time like half a minute...

Hi Sjgadsby, for the last couple of hours i tried everything, taking the battery out for a while and then rebooting the device. It does the same thing , the sound is there but absolutely no display, its completely black.
The battery seems to be charged as the green light comes on, i also tried an older charging cable and no difference at all . One thing i havent tried is reflashing the device as I am not sure how to do this with the N900 , forgive me I am new to all this .So I am at the end of my tethers on my first day with this supposed to be my new "tablet computer-phone"

Sorry i just read that your device switches on but the screen is blank. That solution is to switch on the device.

I think your only option for now is reflashing. You should find a how to in the nokia support page...
