Make sure the folder you are plonking your music and video in is one of the 'Public' folders....not the User folders in Windows Vista/7...those are locked by default and so your N900, whilst being able to SEE the files in there, cannot actually PLAY the files in there.
I just tested. Put your music/video in Public and all is well.
