It doesn't require anything. If it doesn't play then it's simply unsupported. Could you give me the details of those files?

Indeed, .rm files support would be a good idea.

just tested a mpeg ts file with h264 and aac on my n900 and it didn't work.

720p files are not supported by the dsp decoders currently and am not sure they will ever be supported on the N900.
