We just don't want ordinary users to instantly render their device a brick. When an application is stable and working it will appear in Extras for anyone to download.

Or you could use Google to search for changing the graphic in GRUB (assuming here it uses GRUB, don't have my N900 yet), and investigating further. At least show the community here that you have some understanding of the process in Linux first, and if any gaps need to be filled, or confirmation of a process, it is better to ask in that manner rather than "tell me how to do this". Others are simply protecting themselves from the users who come back and go "U SAYZ IT WOOD WERK!!!11! NOW MY N900 NO BOOT!!!" and blame them rather than researching the issue first. Better to teach a man to fish rather than catch the fish for him.
