The WRT-54GL is solid with all of my Maemo devices, although I confess that the N900 had some SSH-specific lag/disconnect problems in the pre-sales version. The sales firmware has seemed to solve those.
I have had serious connection problems with other routers with my Maemo devices at maximum powersaving.

I am with the OP on this. Wifi at my house and places I have been that have open wifi is weak to useless at default, but good at medium setting.
I wish there was a way to do the same thing with GPRS, since the N900 has the weakest reception of any phone I or my family has.
AMAZING device, but weak a55 GPRS radio.
