Well, the first thing you've got to find out is whether the lock screen is free software or not, because if it isn't the answer to that is 'Only Nokia'.

Something useful from the Bold that would be great is have icons for different messages waiting for you and a number (like in the form of x to the power of n, sorry I forget the proper word for the position),
eg. an envelope icon with 2 meaning 2 emails waiting for you, a Yahoo logo with 1 indicating one Yahoo IM, a phone with 3 indicating 3 missed calls, a Skype icon with 5 for 5 missed messages/calls etc. All this can be checked without unlocking the phone. So if you are only bothered about SMS messages at one time, you can ignore the rest.
I wouldn't want the person's names showing up for privacy's sake (unless that can be an option). Remember some people have jealous girlfriends!
PS. I won't be as involved in the next week or two as I'm going on holiday, it's gonna be hectic!
