Maemo 5 applications written in Qt will be easily ported to Maemo 6 (and very likely vice-versa, as long as they don't rely on new platform features). Please cite your reasons why you claim otherwise.
I think you've already implicitly acknowledged the most basic reason. That it all depends on what happens with QT. Do we know what version of QT will be in Maemo 6? Do we know how many of the current Maemo 5 apps are written in that version of QT? Do we know how many of the current Maemo 5 apps are written in any version of QT?

Maemo 5 DOES feature a soft (on-screen) keyboard. You must not own an N900.
No, I don't own an N900. Maybe I misunderstood what I read. Is the OSK integrated and bug-free to the same extent as it was in Maemo 4?

History suggests that Nokia will drop support for Maemo 5 when it moves on to 6. That will be at least a year from now, but all of our crystal balls are a bit fuzzy.
Yup.

i do see a benefit with QT as it means alot of apps only need minor adjustments for porting, which means the OVI apps store stays stable with a nice number of apps on maemo 6 launch.

I would like to see nokia maintain the n900 for 2years with updates etc.
I think moores law applies to the n900 and it's competitors and thats where things are going to get messy. there's iphones that won't handle next gen apps and apple will have to let the new iphones use the full hardware. android phones will fair better as the company's who use that have a similar history as nokia. I'd say nokia will always have 2 type of maemo devices, hardware keyboard, and touchscreen only and a few mash ups between them.

I also think they want maemo 5 to be very stable and the new symbian enviorment stable and out there with lots of QT apps developed before they roll out the maemo 6 os so it has a larger impact straight out and is alot more marketable.

I never saw Maemo 4, but the OSK seems to be no more or less buggy then the ones I've used on other popular platforms.

personally i'm hoping that when maemo 6 is finalized that the n900 OS will be updated to it. As far as hardware wise i dont see any reason why its not possible. But maybe its just wishful thinking that this would be the last smartphone/mid/computer in my pocket i'd ever have to buy.

During that speech by Alberto Torres he did say that they will be bringing out 1 maemo 6 device by the end of 2010.

Yes. You're likely remembering talk of the stylus keyboard, which has been dropped from Maemo in version 5. The finger keyboard remains.

Eldar said there should be a huge update for Maemo 5 in March/April.

I believe the answer to all those question is Yes.

1. Qt 4.6
2. Zero in Extras, less than 10 in Extras-devel (grepping through Packages will give you the exact number)
3. Again, grepping through packages will reveal an an almost non-existant presence in Extras and little more in Extras-devel.

Note that adapting 4.5 to 4.6 is easy (well, except for the uncertain fate of the Maemo5 specific widgets). The real question you want to ask is how easy it will to be to adapt 4.6 to the Maemo 6 UI framework.

Heh, you don't need to be Eldar to figure that out, official Qt4.6 support was announced for 2010Q1, and official support almost certainly means a new firmware.
