nothing is impossible if you know how to make your own custom OMAP-chip and have superb soldering skills.

Have you disabled the extras-devel and extras-testing repositories?

Hmm, for future reference don't use software that is explicitly called unstable/testing (there are big warnings) and then wonder why things go bad...

not a maemo guy at all. but i have had the issue you talk about. i would say backup your contacts and do 2 of three either 1.restart phone 2. use nokia software update or 3. flash the phone. dont update when the icon appears when you have the extras-devel repository enabled. people might disagree but i was mad when the first update came out and i couldnt do it. that is how i resolved my issue. i use win7 64bit. so i used the livecd and flashed from linux. takes about ten minutes. only two to flash. hope i helped. i am the noob guy.

Not enough memory?? I doubt i've used 500mb of memory so far. I've already added a few photo's to contacts a few days ago, so can't understand why its doing that now.
you can just set the photo from the image viewer;

1.Open picture

2.Click the name of the picture.(Top centre)

3.Click Set as avatar.

4.Assign the avatar(Compressed Picture) to your contact.

and you are done.
