OP: easiest way, for now, is to make your own ringtone. Try this site: http://makeownringtone.com/
Or download a program like Audacity or Reaper - it's fun to learn to use an audio editor.

If you are going to put mp3's into the .sounds/ringtones folder I believe they need to be converted to aac format for automatic listing and usability when changing settings for ring tone. I put a mp3 file in there and it gave an error when selecting it in the list. You can also click on the add button and use any mp3 that you might have in your music library on the phone.
