I have not removed any screen protectors, I doubt that would be the main cause.

Yes, as others have reported, I have some additional creakiness when I touch around the edges of the screen, especially near the nokia tab. It comes and goes--I notice the issue mainly when the screen is off. It isn't too much of a problem when the screen is on, since the haptic feedback obscures the creaking.

I'm undecided about whether to send it back to Nokia for potential repair work. On one hand, it is not ideal if I have a unit that has a potential defect re build quality (especially since most people aren't reporting that they have this issue). On the other hand, I'm not sure if the issue is really worth the hassle of schlepping it back off to Nokia, since functionality isn't really affected.

Same issue here...first time I heard it was when I lent against a corner of a bench at work with the phone in my pocket...*CRACK*

Whipped it out and ever since it makes that sound when you apply a little more pressure than normal.

With fingernail it doesnt give that sound but when pressing screen quite hard with finger tip it gives that sound. Doesn't matter me because touchscreens sensitivity is much better when using nail.

The creaking my G1 developed after some weeks could be compared to walking on wooden stairs. Annoying, but harmless.
