Umm... sorry if i caused confusion.
I just shortened red pill mode into RPM. I didn't say anything about the package format

I understand. Actually I wanted to point to YaST package manager. It is close to synaptic but with better interface (simpler to look - description, dependencies, file contents and versions available are seen almost automatically). Some hyperlink could be a plus but never implemented.

The diffs between RPM and deb is a different story.

Although I previously created a pointless thread, for whining about red pill, the only functionality I ever needed from it is the ability to install LOCAL .debs.

Hunting packages in red pill mode is truly stupid especially if you're not a developer and don't know what they do... most of them don't do anything but bricking since they're probably parts of a bigger project, that you as a user know nothing about.

I repeat, this is not a red pill thread!

You can easily destroy your device by installing packages from extras-devel (or extras-testing, or extras). I guess that the next step is disabling of packages not signed by Nokia. Then all we need is for Nokia not to sign rootsh and we have an iphone.

In spite of the blindly leading wording of the poll, no less. I <3 this community.

This is not the solution to the "problem". The solution to the problem is improving App Man and the repo process. Support progressive policies and practice.

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?

You shouldn't unless there's a little programer/hacker inside you that wants to tweak eg. starcraft on maemo...

Do you want me to upload a package with rm -rf / in postinst?

It is so obvious that installing a package might damage your filesystem. But this is true regardless of the package coming from a repository or from your local file system. The decision to only allow packages from repositories does nothing for security.
