Just one point/question: how could portrait support in everything possibly work well when all the widgets and other home screen elements/shortcuts are non-standard sized? All of those would have to be somehow resized or re-arranged when the orientation is changed.

My guess is that many apps will eventuall support portrait, but not the whole UI - notably the homescreens.

Well the biggest ( ehm one of the) gripe l have with the phone is that it's too hard to use it one-handed ( the sms and mail functions stand out).

Can anyone confirm that FBreader works fine in portrait mode?

It's an Easter egg. Use Ctrl+Shift+O to enable it.

Can't remember where I saw this but if you bring up the browser, open the keyboard and the press ctrl+shift+o (all at the same time) and then close the keyboard the browser can then be used in portrait mode.

As I suspected !! I was also waiting for FULL portrait mode as this has been written several places on the web !! Anyway portrait mode is not worknig in the web-browser either, and MS Exchange Server 2003 support is still not working for me (so all my colleagues with iPhones and Nokia N95/82s are capable of syncing their jobmails, but still no me!)..

Anyway, would be REALLY nice to get a proper FINAL conclusion if FULL portrait mode is coming for the N900 from some official sources so that I know how soon I have to sell my N900 !!

Where can we ask for a final answer ??

I do not want to cary around this device if full portrait mode is not coming!!!

Also mix with ctrl+shift+i (fit to screen) for a better reading experience.

Why these aren't available in the menus I don't understand..

Please see Wikipedia's entry on Easter eggs. Nokia representatives have stated publicly that portrait mode web browsing is currently an Easter egg because not all features of the web browser function in that mode yet.

If you put as much effort into searching and reading the official changelogs/wiki/announcments as you put into complaining about unofficial rumours not coming true, then you'd have far less trouble with your device and enjoy it more. If you have problems with it SEARCH for it on the forums then ask about it. It does nothing to help you or anyone with moaning.

As was already stated. browser was said, not full UI, and the apps developer would need to do their own apps for it to work peroperly. as for the rest of the nokia apps like conversations etc there is no official announcement on portrait mode that i have found. just rumours.

in short just sell it as you won't be gettin full portrait mode any time soon.

as for myself, i do see a use for portrait mode for conversations as 1 handed sms is useful.
