I have same problem but don't have extended search installed. This error started after I did sync with Mac Address Book. There were some conflicts, and I updated from Mac. I think the problem may be because of the labels in fields got changed (?).
Having read this I installed extended search, rebooted, uninstalled, rebooted, and all ok again. Maybe installing and uninstalling it cleaned up the contacts file? Anyhow it worked as a fix.

I too had the same problem today however after removing extended search the problem is solved.

guys... i'm having this problem again...
i used hermens to get all my contact's details...
so a alot of duplicate contact...
i installed "duplicate merge contact"
when i click on find duplicate contact
it shows "internal error, application contact closed"
how to solve this problem?
i saw few of you mention remove extend search...
where to remove this thing ??? through FAPman ??
anyways to merge all contact ???

i mean in the fapman i just look for "extended contact search" ???

im having this problem again.
EDIT: no extended contacts plugin installed, each time i use contacts-merger plugin this problem replicates......
SOLVED: i just need to disable facebook IM first and then merge duplicates. in my opinion, this is because of hermes and facebook chat giving contacts extra duplicates, happens the same on my Galaxy S when i sync FB contacts with a FB contacts on an FB Application.

honestly, I really did not got rid of the problem, i just found a way for it not to replicate, but here are some of the things i did.
-if you have hermes, Tap the upper portion, click accounts, click facebook, uncheck "create birthday-only contacts"
-update and retrieve contacts info on hermes as usual.
here's step 2
-open x-term
-type root (must have rootsh)
-type: apt-get autoremove (this should remove an unused/not needed plugin called "python-facebook")
-if apt-get autoremove does not do anything, either this is not installed or you need to remove it manually by typing apt-get remove python-facebook.
This worked for me.....i cannot guarantee that this will work for you or anyone else.......

Uninstalled the Extended Search and now everything is ok.
Will give it some rest and try reinstalling it to see if it causes it to crash again.
