..Or you could get a cheap external amp like the Fiio E5 for 15-20$ that gives less distorted sound and cleaner mids/ treble and a lot firmer bass and will drive your bigger headphones waaay better then a simple tweak that will just push a software gain.

ok ... when i open this thing it shows my hedphone is at '0' ... what is a safe figure to turn it up to before it would break the stereo speakers on my phone?

Try opening Media player in another window and then turning up the volume o max. Back to the Xterminal window and see what it says, min was at 90 so i banged it up to 100
