i tried several linux.inf files including the one from the official sources for 2.6.28.1, but i didn't pull the kernel sources from the nokia reps.
that's what i'll try next, though

Yes it's been tested, the problem is as far as I can tell that that driver file works for module g_ether / "Linux Ethernet Gadget", which e.g. the previous tablets used, but for Maemo5 Nokia has embedded usbnet in the 'g_nokia' module and just changing vid and pid in linux.inf is not enough to make it work.

There is g_ether built for N900 in usb-network-modules; version 0.2
also supports charging when plugged in.

Easiest to take g_ether for N900 in use is to install mad-developer
package which contains gui buttons to switch between g_file_storage,
g_nokia and g_ether.

Both of these packages are available in extras-devel (being promoted to extras)
