BUT, after flashing, it won't pick up my Vodafone SIM card. I just get a little icon of a SIM card with a red line through it, next to my battery meter.

Yeah, of course. I've tried that many, many times.
How would I be able to try the SIM in another phone without doing so?
I'm starting to fear that it may be a hardware problem, that the N900's sim reader is dead, somehow.

Recaller has been working excellent for me...just throwing this in there so people don't think that this app is buggy or anything. Guess something went wrong on your end.
