But the problem here was the juice ran out and even leaving it charging overnight it still wouldn't boot.

I've never let it run out totally but i'd prefer to know it didn't brick the device if I did.

Another soultion is buying an external charger, just type "BL-5J charger" into ebay and you will see several results for external chargers that will give you the juice needed to recharge/reflash/etc some even come with those 3rd party batteries that arent the best thing in the world, but could be used in a pinch if your original dies...I have an external charger and it helped me out on my previous N900 I had to send back due to reboot issues.
