I discovered this issue when I first received my N900 back in december. I had to switch my modem/router setting from Shared to Open. Eventually I will change it again to the more secure WPA/WPA2.
To my knowledge the N900 does not support WEP shared access.

This didn't work the 3 times I tried it last night but it seems to have done the trick this time.
