thanks. I see them in the application manager now.
I used the brushed theme - and the icons where stuck there
I used the Vista theme - now those icons are stuck there.
Selecting brushed (or any other) does not replace the icons again. Maybe the icons are only updated when a theme is installed the first time?

You can uninstall it it will reverse every thing back...

sometimes those pesky icons won't change though 
I just changed a theme through Control Panel - Personalization - Themes and rebooted and I still see the same 3 main icons and the boot screen did not change..
