i went from n95 to n97 to n900. nothing beats the n900. best overall but the one thing is sat nav apps. i used my sat nav apps heavily like maps, garminxt, sygic, mcguider and google maps. when i get few of these and few bug fixes then there is no compatition!

Little warning about these kind of lists. Yes, you can find some software that is like what you have gotten used to on N97/symbian but bear in mind that they will behave in different way and you HAVE to learn some new ways to use them. They will probably evolve and be better over time, but just a little warning
What you have said is true for the N900. You have to get your fingers to use if you want to use the N900 to its potential.

I think the main concern is that you may brick your phone.

n97-low power but more mature platform
n900-high power less mature platform

decide which is best for you

I also went from an N97 to the N900,

I swore blind that the N97 was the best phone ever made until I experienced the N900. There is nothing that the N97 did for me that the N900 doesnt, All the software I brought for the N97 the N900 does for free. such as telexy's brilliant networking tools for s60 can be done with the SAMBA stuff.

The fact that I can do true cross platform encryption using truecrypt was a huge bonus aswell.

I passed my N97 on to a friend and he is loving it but every time he asks me how something works I hate touching it now . it is a great phone but nowhere near the abilities of the N900.

I agree it is missing some Office software but I just use google docs thanks to the browser, its perfect for my needs.

I've gone 5110 (borrowed the work 9000 a lot) -> 9110 -> 9210(pile of sh1t) -> 9500 -> 9300i -> e90 -> n97 -> n900

The 9110, 9500 and 9300i were great for their time, I mean seriously great. The e90 is powerful and useful, then 97 has all the sexyness of any new consumer phone with tiny size to boot (IE my first non communicator, _normal_ phone in a decade). The n900 despite actually being small, somehow "feels" MASSIVE, my fingers ache and I find it much more useful to ssh in and do my UNIX geekyness remotely.

The fact that I can do the latter is why I've left my SIM in the n900, but the N97 was marginally better than the e90 which was marginally better than the 9300i. I was rather hoping for a larger WOW factor jump like I got with the transition from 9000 -> 9110 or 9210 -> 9500. The n97 to n900 felt almost like the step back the 9300i -> e90 or 9110 -> 9210 was.

Nokia often release a newer smaller version of the phones they've released with little or no other change (9000 -> 9110, 9500 -> 9300), so I half expect an n910 or n900i model to be an N97 mini with the OS of maemo. That might rock

The lack of symbian/phone style software is a right pisser, but N thousand linux based tools is very useful.

PS My G1 and N1 Androids (given to me) went straight to my wife, she's not looked back since her 9300.

Im on the 3 network UK, so msn skype etc is free. Im not sure if the usage of the default app is free or not

  • There are 2 browsers I use on the N97 Skyfire and Opera. The N900 default browser cannot stream lag free Iplayer etc. I have installed Firwfox 1.0.0 and its does a better job but the mouse cursor does not work on this one like the default.

  • I sometimes download and send files. I certainly need the unpacking. Unrar and 7zip. For some reason some files unzip using 7zip so having both is a plus

My issue is where can I find them and how do i install/use them. A little guide would help.

For me its the first time having to compile/command software to run or install. So hope you understand that for the first time it can be a little difficult. Once I get it rolling then it will be simple.

As you can understand the N900 smokes any other devices for capability. I can now watch videos in high quality res and format.

I would like to know there is or if it is possible to port a video/audio converter to the N900.

I cannot copy some video files to the PSP or other phones with lower res/format limitations.

At the moment I am uploading on the N900 to online website to convert for me then download it again and bluetooth it to others.

It would be awesome if we could convert a 5mb high quality vid to lower res or other formats which lay on other phones or PSP

Same for me. I use the web to compensate for the lack of software available for the phone.

Three probably doesn't support Nokia N900 anyway so it's kinda useless now. I'm on Three Sweden and have a data package for ~12USD which lets me use unlimited data(after 20GB they limit the speed to 386kbps, 3G speed). In two weeks I've used up 500MB, so using up 20GB is probably not going to happen
