So this will happen with just a firmware change "when Nokia is ready"?

Also regarding the USB cable, will we need to buy a proprietary cable from Nokia? Or purchase a USB adapter?

Will a USB laptop hard drive just plug in an play? Those dont require a power outlet.

OMG, I cant wait!!

Beefy - you missed the key statement from lbattraw

There is speculation that Nokia have NOT fully wired up the socket, so powered USB may not be possible in which case a laptop disk drive will not work (and even if it did would probably suck the battery dry in a minutes!).

Great job, sdrman
I did tear down my N800 as well, looking for OMAP2420 package, but surprising can't find the processor in the main board. Any idea?

Someone makes a usb-otg external self powered hard drive. It was discussed over at the zaurus user group forums. I'll see if I can find it. Ahh, the link is dead now. Google finds a few though.

Post up some pics. I'm sure someone can point it out for ya.

BTW barry99705, I bet the thing could fly to the moon if it had an Apollo X attached to it.

... unfortunately, as it sits (mine) it couldn't navigate an old man to the loo on Father's Day.

That's kind of a mystery to me too. My guess is that the omap is inside the samsung KBN00V00CM-D425. It's in central location and it's the biggest chip. I also see a few traces running to the epson lcd controller. Samsung makes a multiple chip package with their own s3c soc here:
http://www.samsung.com/products/semi...42/SC32442.htm
This chip include a cpu, ram, and flash. I imagine nokia wouldn't have much trouble getting samsung to build one of these with ti silicon inside. But it's big time trouble for one of us just to get the user's manual for one of these chips.

TI's chip is quite small from what I have seen in phones...

Previous to junjongboy's post I had assumed it was one of the three chips with TI's logo shown in sidrman's pics. However a closer look has me scratchin' my head now as well.

From what little I got on the Sammy chip it is listed as a "memory component" ???

The Jaaksi quotes I have read on the subject say "based on a TI OMAP 2420 SoC (system-on-chip)".

Mhhhhh nice find... maybe we have a docking stationg coming up soon... ?!?
Giving the N800 full Capabilities to HDD space and some new controllers IE: USB ports, etc... making it a ver nice MID!

As stated in previous posts, Jaaksi says the processor is "based on the OMAP2420"...
Based is a pretty broad term and I read somewhere awhile ago (before my involvement with an N800) that TI, STMicroelectronics, ARM, and Nokia entered into some kind of partnership agreement.

That STI chip at the bottom of sdrman's pics may be an end result although I can not find a description.

Interestingly, according to the pictures in the first post there is no Tahvo or Retu (Fred or Barney) in the N800. Instead we have Betty and Avilma (Wilma?).

I can't find an OMAP CPU in the pictures - the Samsung IC does appear to be a memory component. Is the OMAP IC on the other side of the PCB? Judging from the OMAP 1710 ICs listed here (click an OMAP 1710 link for images) the IC should have OMAP stamped upon it, but won't necessarily be branded as a TI component. Sadly the nokia-tuning site has no pictures of an OMAP 2420, which I suppose may suggest it's now fully integrated into one of the other ICs, or the site isn't fully up to date!
