I played with the desire over the weekend. Never been so jealous. I left a HTC tytn2 for the N900 and HTC make good phones for the most part (Tytn2 had a pants camera, but that was a minor point.)

Totally agree on the colours, the app store rocks, the provision of basic software on the phone itself (I was told of two apps you do need, but that beats the five I needed to get the n900 working) As a phone it was a phone and did everything. Went on line, it was quick, smooth and clear. Downloaded apps while we watched, messed about with some of the features and it felt good in size and weight.

More importantly it does email sync (I spent seven hours yesterday failing to connect mine and have given up on any functioning work use)

I got the N900 for the keyboard and linux, but there is none of the apps I need and the keyboard is rubbish if you plug in headphones, I can't hold the thing. So I find myself using the on screen one when listening to music because of the ear phone jack location. And I have to wear the headphones to talk to people because of the speaker volume bug.

Everyone seems to be waiting for the second firmware upgrade to make the phone usable. Change the word phone for car and would you still think is this normal?

Imagine BMW releasing a car where you need to download various bits of dashboard accessory to get basic funcionality, like a petrol gauge or low fuel warning. Then you have to wait for the second firmware to make it drivable. BMW don't release the car and then expect a bunch of none paid back street mechanics to add to the car as it drives along over the course of six months.

I think common sense seems to have left some people

my colleagues Desire is awesome, she literally cant put it down and is in love!
It just does what you should expect.And it does it fast, reliably, simply and with such beauty.
I feel like I'm sitting clunking away on an old typewriter in comparison gggrrrrrr - jealous much!
She couldnt belive I cant open email doc attachments without a whole load of expense or palaver

I really want one and wish I had waited instead of getting my N900

anyone want to swap?

In all honesty, i've been looking to switch to the Desire.

I know i'd miss the N900, my first touch screen device, so i'm not sure how i would feel with no hardware keyboard! The other day I was walking holding something, and i needed to text, i thought crap! Oviously its a rare ocasion, but it made me think.

I dont really use all the techy linux stuff, sure it was fun at first, but it's not really for me, i would rather someone who would use the phone to its full capability to have it.

Not to take anything away from the topic, but my N900 is for sale in the buy and sell forum - incase anyone is interested.

Temptations temptations. Only Android could take away so many nokia users. We are all use to be ahead of the game with fully blown solid functions and Maemo for many hasnt delivered that. A different market and audience may be?

I'll get my GF to get the droid Incredible. This way i'll have best of both.

...doesn't look like it supports T-Mo (USA) 3G:

Network Bands2

Europe:

* HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz
* GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

Asia Pacific:

* HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz
* GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

...this version is missing the 1700 band for T-Mo (USA) 3G.

Best things so far about my Desire:

An app called handtec - its is sooo configurable. Like the N900 SMS Customization thread where you have to go in a code everything and play with font sizes. This app does it all with parameters in a nicely laid out menu structure. Something the N900 isnt very good at!

Also the street view google maps navigation is just awesome and works a treat.

I have no regrets about buying the Desire.
