Not impossible if its something minor that was changed, but it sounds like a lot of different aspects of the OS are messed up, I can't imagine uninstalling a few applications fixing such a major problem.
He must have installed something not optified so unistalling programs would probably solve it.

Ended up reflashing the thing, will keep your posts in my mind just in case I need help in the future
