The most important advantage of Maemo and MeeGo, in my opinion, and I think you will agree with me, is the openness of the OS. By this, disregarding tone or formality, I can only see that the N900 is dead if not dying.

We knew this already, but what bothers me is that these plans and answers seem very rigid and inflexible. It's like someone decided that the N900 must be differentiated somehow, so it's not allowed to have certain features.
Otherwise I don't see why they couldn't simply backport the new Qt applications for very little cost in Q4. The logic behind this policy makes me a bit wary about the future - are the accusations about infighting and bureaucracy too true?
If I was running the show, I'd launch Harmattan on a non-keyboard device and revitalize the N900's software to immediately have an almost equivalent OS on two devices instead of only having one horse in the race until the product line expands. It's powerful enough, and could be produced much more cheaply while keeping the price fairly high. Only the non-multitouch screen would warrant a small discount.

To clarify, I generally don't mind using the device in landscape. I even managed to get used to switching songs with one hand, when standing in a crowded bus
. But this really bothers me for some reason, that resources went into portrait browser instead of portrait messaging. In particular, note the response he gives in the interview:"At the same time knowing that adding "phone" component, require the portrait orientation in some cases, we have added it to the main applications, where it is used. For example, Contacts, Phonebook and the browser."
Browser, to me, clearly doesn't fit in that answer.

For the life of me, I can't understand why the browser, of all places, has a portrait mode. There are literally a million other uses for portrait mode that better fit it. In fact, I prefer to use the browser in landscape so I don't have to zoom quite that often. Conversations and a portrait soft keyboard would be a more important place for portrait. Also, the music player, for fast switching of songs on the go. But the browser?

Im getting sick and tired of these not planned aswers. we have to do every freaking thing ourselves. think of how it would be if we didnt had this open platform. this device would really be a disaster. 10000s of people are asking for some things and only thing nokia is saying is, sorry not planned.
its pissing me off.
and in the mean while they keep us quiet with a stupid half working ovi suite. forgodsake! this should have been there working 100% from day 1 the n900 was released.

Nokia are a business and have chosen a path of using the OSS community phenomenon to reduce their overheads specifically after sales support and development. Unlike Apple who do the opposite and make a killing from their Applications store.
