then perhaps we can limit the "auto lock screen" when the proximity sensor detects something ... This would limit the processes and battery usage would be spared.
The phone would lock itself only when in your pocket.
I think that the proximity sensor will be 99.9% accurate and keep the lock whilst in a pocket ...

i have fiddled with proximity sensor a few times and i don't think it will be accurate enough for the purpose. Again - it may be ok when in tight pockets but when it is loose (especially when moving about)?
Sorry maybe it is just me being too cautious but i really don't like the idea of unlocking the keys or touchscreen too easy.

one thing my n900 does and shits me is

its charging from wall, screen down and locked.. I flip phone over and it unlocks automatically?? wtf!

I've played with the pre-existing code for shake to unlock and added proximity sensor support.

It's a huge drain on the battery to be polling the sensors so much.
