wow it really works. Trying it with Titans kernel 1000mhz and it flys. No stuttering or anything.
Thanks to OP for the script. Kudos

Another thing I can't use being in the US. I miss my BBC. Sigh.

WGET was not installed.. recent reflash to PR1.2.
Fixed by running apt-get install wget

Took it's time but it works, with pausing inbetween

Nice work so far!

Here is a tarball which installs the script and the shortcut. Save it, open terminal and go to the directory where the tarball is, and run (not sure if tar is included by default but it is in the repositories)
Code:
tar -xzvf tvcatchup.tar.gz -C /home/user
Thanks for pointing out that you need to install wget, too. So, you need at least mplayer, firefox and wget. Anything else?
Attached Files
File Type: gz tvcatchup.tar.gz (962 Bytes, 165 views)

amazing I can now watch tvcatchup, but on a 16mb wifi connection it seems to drop out then pick up again. Not 100% smooth playback.

For a moment I thought a lot was happening in terminal, but after a short delay mplayer opened and pictures and sound started.

Great work - can anyone QTize this?

I would like to put a link here to the wiki but I have not found an appropriate guide. Sometimes the wiki is VERY slow for me regardless of the computer/browser.

OK, for those having trouble with the command line here is a quick and dirty way to get this installed. Not exactly step-by-step nor totally command line but close. arajantie was nice enough to tar this thing up so it is a bit easier, thanks arajantie.

If you are reading this with your N900 skip this step.
Navigate to talk.maemo.org > software > multimedia > TVCatchup Script (page 2, post #14) with your N900.

Now tap on the "tvcatchup.tar.gz" file and should open the save file dialog. Tap "Save to device" and then check the Location button to see where the file will be saved. If it is not the name of your device tap the Location button and navigate back to the button with the name of your device. Mine is usually in the last location I saved something to so it would need to be changed. If this goes well the file will be in your MyDocs directory.

Now you should be able to type "Ctrl backspace" then tap menu button in the upper left and open X Terminal. Then in xterm type "cd MyDocs" then "ls" and you should see the file tvcatchup.tar.gz in the listing.
Code:
cd ./MyDocs
ls
So far so good?

Now either type in the tar command from post #14 and the chmod command from post #16 or cut and paste them.
Code:
tar -xzvf tvcatchup.tar.gz -C /home/user
chmod 775 /home/user/tvcatchup.sh
To cut and paste between the browser and xterm type "Ctrl bakcspace" and tap the browser window if you are not already there. Scroll to post #14. Now swipe from off of the left-lower side of the screen to the screen and a box with an arrow should appear. Tap boxed arrow and a red slash should appear over the arrow. You are now in the mouse mode. Now highlight the code you want to copy. Type "Ctrl C" to copy the highlighted text. Type "Ctrl backspace" and tap on X Terminal to return to xterm. To paste in xterm you have to tap the X Terminal title bar on the top of the screen then tap the paste button. Then hit enter. Repeat for the chmod command in post #16. For more information:
http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_shortcuts_and_gestures

In xterm type "wget" and see if you get a help message or not found message.
Code:
wget
If not found you will probably need the "rootsh" application installed before you can install wget with apt-get (post #13). For more information:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Root_access
NOTE: In Application Manager > Application Catalogs "Extras" is now "maemo.org" on the N900.
I Believe "rootsh" is in Application Manager > Download > System
If needed you can now install wget.

Code:
sudo gainroot
apt-get install wget
You should now be good to go.

Question: Can wget be installed as the regular user through the application manager? From what repo? When I configure an NIT I usually install the network and administration tools I want from the command line. So it makes it difficult to answer a beginners question

Proof readers: If I need to edit anything let me know. Thanks.

Take care.

Does mplayer play iphone tvcatchup streams without lag or without dropping out then picking up again (aka freeze frames, pausing, stuttering etc), for anyone?

I can get playback but it's in bursts / not sustained, and was wondering whether this might be in some way connected to other video playback problems already noted for pr 1.2

e.g.
