Got mine running stable with min of 125MHz and max of 1150MHz.

I like your buttons to switch between different overclock settings... I might do it when I have more time.

Will see how the battery goes over the next few days. Hopefully.. better =]

I hope this solves your battery problems.
BTW, do you feel a notable boost between 1000 and 1150?
I didn't want to go so high, I am still afraid of long term damage a bit.

Edit : Though I have not seen ANY proof of OC damage in this forum so far.

Email & calendar are synced every hour. (Despite my WM6 device being able to stay connected and push email to me for 2 days between charges, that's beside the point)

I updated to 1.2 and things got.. worse. I flashed the EMMC and the <other bit which name currently eludes me> My CPU is stuck at 100% all the time, resulting in an even shorter battery life.

According to Conky, 'hildon-home' is the culprit. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how/why it is using so much CPU time?

I did try to overclock it an hour or so ago, and all it did then was stick at 1000MHz all of the time, followed by a restart.

Any suggestions would be very welcome!
Hey, I had the exact same problem for the first few days after 1.2 update, and through days of rigourous troubleshooting sparked after waking up at 8am to a phone I took off the charger because it was fully charged at 3:45 am (4 hours? ..idle? really?) At first I couldn't even get it to boot up...
... well the Hildon-desktop was the culprit or part of it anyways... I noticed after a few days that this only happened once my network connection was off. it seemed that my desktop needed to have a constant internet connection to work. Well this couldn't be right? never had the problem before... I then started thinking about what I had installed that was network related. I have been very careful what to download after 1.2, especially from testing or devel. the ONLY app i had from devel repository was autodisconnect (which I love by the way) I remember noticing that Autodisconnect was no longer in testing repos as it was before 1.2 but downloaded it anyways. it turns out that autodisconnect was actually the real culprit. As soon as I uninstalled it and rebooted my problems dissappeared. It has no been 2 days with no issues with the hildon-desktop or heavy cpu usage! everything is great, I just have to wait for autodisconnect to update out of development before I can enjoy it again Now I just have to disconnect manually until then. Hope this helps

The battery situation is defiantly getting better! And besides... I like tinkering =p So it at least keeps me occupied.

I didn't really notice a difference between 1000 and 1150. But then again, I didn't really notice a difference between 850 and 1000.

I do notice though, that my N900 only seems to use (from what I can tell in Conky) 125, 500 and 1150. I've never seen it at any other frequency.
Don't suppose there is an app which can tell me time spent in each state is there? That'd be useful...

1150 is stable for me, not had a problem with it at all. I've heard that Overclocking can damage things... but my desktop has been running its little 2GHz self at 3.2GHz for nearly 2 years now with no problems =]

I think it'll reduce the life of the product... but then again, in 2 years time, I suspect most people would have moved on to another device, so lifetime really isn't an issue for me personally.

I had noticed that hildon-desktop was causing CPU to spend a lot of active, a lot of the time active at 1150MHz! But I haven't gotten around to seeing what the cause was. From what I could find out, hildon-desktop is responsible for widgets and things on the home screens. Although I could have gotten it mixed up with something else :S

I rely on Autodisconnect a lot... but I might try getting rid of it for a day and see how my phone fares. Although, just as I went to do it, it said there was an update.. so I'll see how the update goes and try again tomorrow =]

Thanks for the info though. How long do you think your battery would get on standby then?

After today (I'm super cool/super lame, and keep a spreadsheet to work these things out), my spreadsheet shows that I would get an estimated battery life of nearly 23 hours. That's based on how I used my phone today... which actually was a fair amount. Not the fairest test in the world, but it does give me some idea of what to expect.

well i had the same issue the 2nd day after that update to 1.2 together with the updates to facebook and Associated press widget.

My battery would drain out on a full charge in 5hrs.
I downloaded the batterygraph app and observe the CPU usage in Xterminal and in the end i figured out the culprit is the AP news widget. That widget is like always taking up more than 30% of my CPU. i removed that from my desktop and now my battery can last up to 12hrs on a full charge with wifi connection on and IM logged in.

Ok, so from OC'ing - is there a way to "cool" it?

I know about OC'ing comps - but phone CPUs don't exactly have the luxury of excess space - so what's the deal here? any way to apply thermal grease/compound?

There is no way to cool it.
And you need to realize that if you play angry birds for 2 hours straight @ stock speed vs @ OC speed, your phone will get a little hotter.
The OC objective in my opinion, is make the phone run snappier, so when you need the camera fast, it will load in half the time.
Or when you need a browser, it will load in half the time.
On a side effect, I do feel the great improvement in battery life.

Actually, There is a script that does test how much time your CPU spent at each freq.! I just never used it.
I think its called "cpu time" or something.
Start searching (;
Using command execution widget you can take the scripts output and put it on your desktop as a widget.

Make a new battery cover for the phone with a built in fan!
But really... I don't think it will be too much of a problem, it probably has safety cut outs to prevent it getting too hot. I don't know this for a fact, I'm just guessing here!

My old phone (HTC Touch Pro) could get too hot to hold if you: charged; wifi; gps all at once. My GFs HTC Hero actually has an app which runs everything at once so you can use it as a hand warmer!

I'd rather take the risk and have a more responsive phone =]

EDIT: just remembered that CPUFreqUI has a temperature sensor in it I think, you can use that to monitor the temp if you want?
