I emailed the maemo users list, and received the following reply. I am not sure why they don't put it in the garage...

I have removed mnotify from the repo following the request of its
developers. The sw had some bugs and afaik they are working on the
fixes. I do not know when the new release will be available, so please
don't ask it

For what it's worth, the notifier has been working for me without any apparent bugs so if there are any I dont' seem to have been affected by them. There are a couple of things I wish for though:
1) Unfortunately it's only possible to specify a single account to monitor.
2) It doesn't automatically detect that networking is turned on, so it'll wait out its retry period before checking, unlike e.g. the osso-email notifier. No big deal though, as it's just to click 'check now' of course.

I installed and was running it for about a week, but noticed massive battery drain. Since deactivating it, I am back to several hours from less than one.

Since my last posting before Easter I've also observed battery drain on one occasion: In the morning I heard a strange sound from the N800, it turned out it was a low-battery warning. Charged it right away. Haven't seen it happen again since then, I don't know if this is just random or what but I'm now running with the BT shut off while not in use. Could be that it's not related at all of course, and that it was really caused by the mnotify applet. In any case this is not troubling me for the moment.

I found it in
http://repository.maemo.org/catalogu...ser/m/mnotify/

I guess it was put back.

Indeed, it wasn't there the day before yesterday. This seems to be a newer version (1.3), the one I have installed is 1.1. But an update didn't upgrade the version on my N800, it looks like even though it's in the repository it's not in the Packages file yet.

I installed directly from the deb - the tableteer install fails with missing package.

I'd read that mnotify may drain the battery quite quickly (flat within a day) hence the reason for pulling it - I've installed 1.3 and after 18 hours with WiFi enabled throughout I'm still on 4 bars.
