it's just sitting on the desk. I passed it to my various family members, but they never seemed to get the hang of using it... so now it just collects dust

Seriously... send it my way. I miss my N810.

Anyway, I used to tether it to my phone and use it that way. That's one way to use it alongside your smartphone.

Now, my 810 is on all the time, and is velcro'd to my car dashboard, and it tethers to my 900 while enroute, and hits my home and work wifi on either end of my commute.. Perfect...
Also, use it for messing around with my ODB2 bluetooth dongle with the Carman softwate.

I've installed openvpn server on my n800 so I can vpn into home and securely browse the web from my n900 when out and about on insecure public wifi networks. Also installed apache + webdav so I can use xmarks to keep my bookmarks in sync on all my PCs. And samba for file sharing. And using wget to download big files without leaving my PC on all the time. And a little cron job that checks my router's working and reset it if necessary. In summary, an always-on mini server that only uses a tiny amount of power.
