You meant Rygel from the Fatal repo? I got it to work every time. After the installation, you must run it in order to enable DLNA. It will automatically create a list of files to stream. It work with my Ps3.
Step:
install Rygel
xterminal:
rygel
That's it! leave the terminal open and DLNA will scan for media and pictures. It slightly slow at first.
Try this, i can guarantee that it will work

No nothing will open.
rygel AFAIK doesnt have a UI and only scans the media present in the system and makes it available over UPNP.
So you can simply do a top command from a different xterm window and you should be seeing the rygel process indexing the mediafiles.
After sometime, the phone should show up in the scans from the DLNA TV or any laptop/ computer in the same network.
You should also have a look at http://live.gnome.org/Rygel/IOP

Thanks for the link most useful, however think i have failed at first hurdle.
Nude question here, i opened the terminal and just typed rygel and got the following
/home/user/.config/Rygel/Tracker.xml:2: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found
So then i tried sudo gainroot and then rygel and got following
/home/user # rygel
Segmentation fault
/home/user #
Now im sure im doing something really sily here
cheers

Cover up dude
On a serious note, i'll give this app a shot and see if there is some problem with the app version itself. Segmentation fault can mean anything from faulty hardware to faulty app.
Just to check are you running on an overclocked kernel?
look into the Tracker, xml and if it is not specificaly useful (or doesnt look like it) another thing to do is to delete the Tracker.xml and try running rygel from command line as a normal user.
