My Grandma has an iPad. Its great, but a complete waste of money. Its not a necessary device. However if you have the money its great, and its great for people like my grandma who love the internet, but a computer is too difficult to use (physically) and maintain.
It's not a 'necessary device' but neither is a sports car or a remote control for your tv.

Perhaps iPad is like N97 - people that buy one will eventually wish they had a *bit* more patience instead of doing that silly impulse purchase, because superior products are just behind the corner.

I feel the n900 should be a great or semi-great smartphone first before we can give it credit for its accomplishments a computer. But I probably belong to a very small minority on this thought.

Silly impulse purchase? Neither actually. I'm already looking forward to the iPad 2 but if you keep waiting for the superior product you'll never end up buying anything, be it a car, tv or microwave.

iPad has the huge first mover advantage here - there are no credible alternatives available for purchase, so customers are not able to make a real choice. At this point, smart money shows some restraint and avoids the urge to buy anything right now.
I know iPad has a strong "ooh shiny" effect, probably stronger than other Apple products - but if you look into the whole gadget objectively, you'll see that it's nothing others wouldn't be able to do better.
