all you need is an IR hotspot, basicly a point or small area (blob) that is brighter than the surroundings

exactly, stylus that actively transmits somekind of energy (ir in this case) is active stylus (at least in my vocabulary).

with nokias film no styluses are needed.

if this guy can do it without anything, I suppose it should be possible using n900

What happens if you stand in front of the camera?

I assume it will stop working?

The nice thing about it its all contained in a single package and if you need to hold an impromptu presentation it could be very handy.

No, it's just an infrared button. Works with any remote control that has IR on it. Even with a N900.

1. it is pointing device, aka "stylus"

2. it has power source and emits radiation, aka "IR"
