Try this first
sudo gainroot
apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade


then execute
apt-get install abiword

This will solve your problem

are you sure? I've seen reports that apt-get upgrade can mess the whole system up.....

e: this btw doesn't help at all with the problem

Once I had a same problem as yours when I was trying to backup my apps. Look into here http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=64648
The procedure which I suggested you indeed solved my problem.

I am frequently using apt-get upgrade command and found, no problem with this.

what about looking outside your own belly button? the upgrade can really mess things up, it isn't app manager compatible at all...
