My device is still on 1.2 and although the arrow icon appears when you swipe from the left, I cannot see a way of selecting the text...so I believe yes, it's new to 1.3.
i dont know if it makes any difference but i hav modified the appearance to show an avatar for myself and to align me left and recipiant right.

FYI, message threads are just mozilla browser windows. The front end is entirely written in user-customizable javascript and CSS. For those familiar with the command line, here's what ps tells you:
