the trouble is: uboot is one of the widest used and one of the best an most flexible bootloaders available. it is one of the best if not the best bootloader currently available for embedded devices. if you look wich devices all run with uboot, maybe some you use, like routers or other phones, without you knowing it, then you might understand what class of bootloader it is. it is fit for almost everything you might want from a bootloader. loads from where you want, has scripting capabilities as well as support for customized binaries to load and run. is capable of a lot more than grub for instance btw. there are other good bootloaders but uboot is among the best.
if you don't believe me you might belive wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_U-Boot

uboot realy is fine. the real problem is the things around it and that it is patched with a hack(like it though, nice work) to make it work and an environment that does everything to break it. it is a fine hack but uboot is not fit for productive use in maemo with that alone as it is not userfailsave.
but i guess thats why it is in extras-devel. think thats where it belongs.

I'm using titans Kernels with joy, i like it until now.....
I was using til v42 with a lot of happynis, espaccially the overclock part. I tried v45 but then i have this pinguin (that's OK), and this Uboot thing. I never used any other kernel that the stock one. But with v45 it's stopt during boot. Somehow it's regonizing a boot part on the smmc sd card. I have to enter run noloboot, than it runs fine. Without a sd card inserted also no problems.

BUT why put in the uboot thing??? Many people have trouble with this, reading the many post on the forum.
I don't like this uboot, because, at reboot, the unit is not fully booted at once, i have put run noloboot within 3 sec....

How many people are really using this uboot/multiboot option??? Most of the users want a stable custum kernel, with overclock option, because the stock nokia's one is very bad, full of bugs, laggy and it can't even record video's without stuttering...

Titan has provided a good kernel v42, that's included the PR1.3 fixes. I'am happy with this one. USB mode support is a nice addon, for the newer versions. I liked that one...

So my suggestion is, remove that uboot crap, if some users want to use that, there is a separate program/download install for.

Stick to optify the stock kernel, with add some usefull extra's such as overclock option.
Maybe titan can look at matan's hildon-desktop for reduce cpu usage in idle mode????

Nokia provide us a great device/hardware, but lacks in the software.

Al that we want is a stable, fast, bug free device!

So far i'm happy with titans kernel v42

You've missed the point of extras-devel.
Also, see Titan's post (includes instructions to downgrade kernel-power)

Again it is a charm reading all those replies to a really annoying "feature" of uboot.

Simple as that: Who does want his boot priority set to SD-card?
I don't! Another problem is that it does not check or hangs if there is a SD-card while booting even if it is properly formatted and there is no secondary OS partition setup ever.

And please be nice to the new people over here, they aren't as frustrated/bored/tired of nokia, maemo and it's dependencies as you are... at least not yet

sure does it check it. thats what the whole hack relies on.
it even checks via checksum if a loaded kernel is sane...

yes you can format via n900,

navigate to filemanager - keep ya finger clicked on memory card and a option would pop up where in format option would be stated. click on it and you are done

P.s. to other members - apart from being a new soul here this guy has a genuine query wherein the booting is not automated , apolite readressal his issue is expected rather than blowin him up !

Ok thanks for the info, i will try this later on, first i have to make a backup of the sd card content.
When i have done that, i will reconsider upgrading to titans kernel v45,

format: mkfs.vfat

just to why i defend the uboot:

there is no sane solution for booting with maemo atm. and uboot has everything that is needed to get such a solution.

you can have a bootmenue with a fancy picture in the background. just like you have it with grub.

you can put unlimited number of kernels on the disk and choose between them. just like you know it from grub.

you can have as many partitions or systems to be loaded as you want to and chose between them. just like you know it from grub.

you can have a easy config file e.g. just a file with some name, kernel and partition to load like you are used to it from grub.

and you have shell in the bootloader to manually start if everything else fails.+

and you can have all that without neccessity to flash.

you can have a serial console.

you can even boot via tinyftp(rescueimage for instance).

uboot is used that way and has prooven enough that this is fit for it.

but: parts are afaik broken and others(bootmenue) you need to create or adapt from another machine.

what it sure can't solve is broken kernels or broken flashers or kernels that don't override it(deinstalling)....
what it can provide is to get rid of all the complicated flashing stuff and replace it with simplicity. while usability is not given atm it has everything to achieve it. while all the other stuff currently used doesn't have a chance to get there.
