2disbetter: I have used mobilehotspot before, and that is the very reason (hit and even worse battery lfe) why I went to USB connection (as a 3G modem for WAN connectivity) to a dedicated router.
I used n900 as a modem attached to my PC and used ICS to share it on my network as an interim solution (in ad-hoc wifi mode) - but the drawback was that I could not move my laptop easily (since the phone was connected via USB wire).
The other problem that I had with the Laptop that the Y-cable did not help - because the intelligent USB hub was always reporting 500mA as maximum.
Also connections were flaky, and I had to fiddle with "route add" and other issues - all this has been solved with the dedicated router in the infrastructure mode.
