Oh thatīs bad. What kind of HW issues?
I did install stuff from extras repositories, when the phone got too laggy, I just got rid of that stuff.
Also, I had to flash the new firmware. Too hard too make a decent over the air-update?
Yes itīs hard to make it work when you have installed apps from testing, devel or hacks to default system files.

The problems: First time: The onscreen keyboard didn't appear anymore, later, i could only slide anymore. No more tapping.
Did this happen after installing applications or doing tweaks to system? OR just out of blue suddenly?

Nokia gave me a new N900.
You got new N900 because of software bug/error? WTF?

This phone had white spots on the screen. As a photographer, it's just not done showing my portfolio with white/light spots on the screen (I could live with the lag when sliding through +-1000px images.).
Yes white spots are issue. I have them also

After a month, the screen was replaced. A few weeks went by: Suddenly, no more apps on my homescreens. No more menu-button and time indication. After rebooting the device, it just woulndt start anymore. It kept rebooting. (WAIT! Maybe it was just Nokia's way to finally give that reboot-function ) I went back to the store, they checked, and told me it was a hardware problem again. The phone is fixed now. And sold. Maybe my N900 was hexed. Maybe al of my Nokia's (except the oldscool ones).
So maybe you were really unlucky or just happened to get that ~6% (IIRC 6% is quite regular faulty devices mean, but probably with n900 it could be higher)

And the speakers: Yes, they were good for a phone, surely if you compare it with HTC. That harsch htc-sound is a nightmare compared to the pretty deep and warm stereo sound of the N900. But now, in total peace with myself, I can accept that
You should try Nokia express music and test how it plays music from speakers.

Suddenly. The problem wasn't a softwareproblem. If it would have been, they could have fixed it at the Nokia Care Centre where I bought it. But they told me it was a hardware malfunction and had to send it to .. dunno. After a month, they told me they couldn't fix the phone, and gave me a new one. This one had the spots on the screen. I told them I couldn't accept this phone, so they returned it, fixed the screen, and gave it back. A few weeks later, I got the reboot-problem.
I'm really carefull with my phone, I've invested in a good, expensive protector (I always do). It's just that my 3 expensive Nokia-products all failed on me.

It's threads like this that make me thankful that:-

a. My N900 has run beautifully since day one
b. I've only gone near devel once (for grooveshark)
c. I've got sticky hands
d. If I decide to leave, my 'bye' post will have more than 1 post by me
e. My N900 has run beautifully since day one (I know I've already said that but I thought I'd say it twice as it's a biggy)

Adiós amigo - Best wishes

This is one big reason why Phone manufacturers make their phone as close as ever and put on security stuffs.

The more open the phone is the more it becomes fragile.

I'm sorry, blue_led, my thread isn't meant for you and the rest of the narrow minded kids here (just like those narrow-minded macfags and droid-lovers!).
This thread is for the people who want to know about a real user-experience. Not only about numbers and promises and things-that-would-be-zomfg-friggin-awesum-on-mah-n900.
So if I offended you with my story, too bad, you'll run into similar situations..
If maybe even one of those maemo-developers could be touched by this thread, it would be awesome. Maybe the people pulling the cords in Maemo could think about another cellphone manufacturer that is more open to alternative, young and promising OS/software/..
But to the people still working for and believing in this OS: keep it alive!

@elgeedc

I'm with you but i still use it for mp3 songs in toilet due to having best speakers on any phone. Other than that nothing ever since i bought iPhone4. I would suggest giving iphone it a try as it is much better device / platform than android. I've used Nitdroid on n900 as well so i know. THere are so many apps/games you will be boggled to use which ones. It's totally opposite of maemo platform where there was dearth of software and now you're innundated with 10s of 100s of thousands. Here we jumped on angry bird like hungry wolves on rabbit and there you'll have 100 variations of that game plus original angry birds, halloween edition, and now chirstmas edition. With tons of levels .

The achievments and scores are kept like XBox live and you have friends list to compare scores. This is now standard for all games on iOS 4.1 onwards.

Amazing platform just give is a try.

Happy gaming and enjoying your new platform.

why are you blaming eegdc when nokia themself are not confident about maemo.

n900 is definately the last nokia device with maemo on it.

Tell me if Iam wrong .

They think meego is the future . Well , wish them Good Morning when they are are awake .

Thanks for the reply sak500. I made up my mind with the HTC Desire Z (US: t-mobile G2). A close relative uses the Iphone4. I need a hardware keyboard, micro-usb, swappable cards and battery's. Also, I want to be in control of my phone, not the other way around. I'm pretty sure the Iphone4 is a good phone for some people on the market. Not for me though.

@sands.m: Indeed.. nokia promised a lot. And still does. I'm not a believer anymore.
