Same as how your pc lights blink for cpu/hdd usage.
You can disable these. I made a thread for NITDroid which has that in there.

I ran my phone for around 6 months in RD mode.
It also stops programs from 'force closing' if I remember correctly.

If you don't have a need to be using RD mode, don't.
I need it for some development purposes but I don't wanna use it without any info why it is saying it can brick my device. Yes I already know how to disable the blinking. Just wanna make sure it's safe.

Safe. Run it.
I was hacking and smashing plenty. No issues.

AFAIK, in N8x0 days, or at least this is what I know about others, R&D mode allowed you to wipe the bootloader causing the device to be completely unrepairable.

Not sure if this is the same with the N900 since it includes USB cold flashing, but it might be similar in some ways.

On that note, been in R&D mode since May iirc, your battery life might decrease a little (10 minutes maybe?) because of the lights (but those can be turned off)

Isn't R&D mode not avaiable anymore since a couple of official firmware releases ago?

RD mode is available in all firmware versions. I use with PR 1.3.

Development purposes. Don't use if you don't need it.
Other OS's sometimes, too.

I don't know if this is really only applicable to me or what but isn't cold flashing disabled? Somehow when I tried cold flashing on my n900 it couldn't detect the device... Just stuck at No USB found

Since R&D mode disables watchdogs will this mean that there is more RAM available?
